		Sinopse: This textbook is for the standard undergraduate course in physical chemistry. In writing this book, I have kept in mind the goals of clarity, accuracy, and depth. To help make the presentation easy to follow, the book gives careful definitions and explanations of concepts, full details of most derivations, and reviews of relevant topics in mathematics and physics. I have avoided a superficial treatment, which would leave the student with little real understanding of physical chemistry. Instead, I have aimed at a treatment that is as accurate, as fundamental, and as up-to-date as can readily be presented at the undergraduate level. The following improvements were made in the fourth edition: Exercises have been added to nearly all the worked-out examples; The number of worked-out example was increased from 107 to 119; 113 new figures have been added; Section 2.12 on problem solving has been expanded; The material on spectroscopy has been expanded and update to include discussion of laser-induced fluorescence (in Sec.21.11), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (in Sec.21.9), spectroscopy of jet-cooled species (in Sec21.11), dynamic NMR spectroscopy, the nuclear Overhauser effect, and two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy (all in Sec.21.12). The discussion of lasers in Sec.21.2 was expanded; The material on molecular electronic structure has been expanded and updated by the addition of Sec.20.8, which discusses basis sets, configuration interaction, Moller-Plesset perturbation theory, the density-functional method, and their application to calculations of molecular properties. Also, the material on molecular mechanics was expanded (Sec.20.10); A discussion of femtosecond transition-state spectroscopy has been added to Sec.23.3; Throughout, the text has been revised to clarify, simplify, and update material.
